Charities

The chosen charities for the World Cup Trek 2010 work exclusively in Africa and primarily with children. We have attempted to recruit organizations that work in countries along the suggested route, however knowing that teams will chose their own route we have also branched out to countries throughout the continent. Nomadic Nation is dedicated to making a difference through the continent. Of course we and you -the teams- cannot save the continent, but surely we can help to improve the lives of thousands of children living in poverty giving them a future that will hopefully contribute to a better future not only for them but the entire country they live in.

We are constantly working on finding new charities and urge you our citizens, or any organizations out there the submit a request to be a recipient of Nomadic Nation's World Cup Trek 2010. We are selective, but always open to suggestions.

Coaching for Hope (Skillshare International) is an innovative programme that uses football to empower young people in developing countries. Coaching for Hope taps into the universal passion for the game by training groups of local coaches in basic football coaching skills.

Allied to this, our unique accredited curriculum offers modules on HIV prevention and substance misuse which are then incorporated into training sessions with youth teams, community groups, youth leagues and tournaments.

"As a disabled person and an England amputee footballer, I am happy to endorse this programme which gives an opportunity for disabled people to play football and helps integrate disabled people into mainstream society"
Steve Johnson, England Amputee footballer.

Kick4Life uses the power of football to transform the lives of some of the most disadvantaged children in the world. Working in Lesotho, southern Africa, they deliver a range of programs that provide sports-based health/HIV education, voluntary testing, life-skills development and support into education and employment. Lesotho has the third highest HIV prevalence in the world and hundreds of thousands of children have been orphaned by the disease. In 2008 Fabio Capello visited a Kick4Life Test Your Team event and observed a young boy being tested for HIV. The England coach described it as one of the most emotional moments of his life and called on the world of football to do more in the fight against HIV. "The World Cup Trek is a fantastic, fun and innovative challenge that will take in the length and breadth of a beautiful continent. With the World Cup coming to Africa for the first time in 2010, the trek will give those taking part the chance to be a part of what promises to be an incredibly exciting year. And what better way to use the funds than to invest in programs that use football to make a positive difference. For every $5 raised by the trek Kick4Life will be able to test a child for HIV, referring those who are positive to life-saving antiretroviral treatment."

Founded by former professional soccer players in 2002, Grassroot Soccer (GRS) trains African soccer stars, coaches, teachers, and peer educators in the world's most HIV-affected countries to deliver an interactive HIV prevention and life skills curriculum to youth. Translating research into action and leveraging the excitement around the 2010 World Cup, GRS attracts and engages young people through schools, community outreach, and social multimedia. GRS has educated more than 270,000 kids via its 'Skillz' curriculum, and is a leader in the sport for development movement.

GRS operates primarily in Zimbabwe, Zambia and South Africa, but through their implementing partners their reach extends across the continent. The suggested World Cup Trek route traverses three of their countries. In addition to the countries it works in GRS has been highly recognized and awarded for their outstanding assistance to African youth including being the winner of the Nike/Ashoka Sports for a Better World Collaborative Competition.
